I absolutely hate absolutes. I’m trying to stay positive about things, but the more I see things devolving into two tribal factions, the more I see absolutes filtering into our dialogue and the less room I find for valuable discussion and time taken for people of differing opinions to have substantive and profound conversations.
My coworker mentioned the recently passed Florida bill. He casually called it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Had I not known him, then I would be able to make a number of assumptions about him. Most notably, that he did not actually read the legislation. It also would imply that he watches main stream news networks or reads left-leaning media outlets. It would imply that he takes much of the narrative online or on the TV as gospel fact, and trusts that the media would never lie to him.
It’s unfortunate. And all too often this applies to so many online, and in real life. But I don’t see this getting better any time soon.
