Thought of the Day – 5/4/22

What a time to be alive. We’re about to see Roe v Wade overturned, and the NPF’s are losing their minds. National abortion has been a long established precedent, going on fifty years (1973), was not a well-grounded ruling, but was a matter of judicial activism. Planned Parenthood v Casey reaffirmed that. But the emanations and penumbras are not the basis by which we should be deciding these topics.

I agree with the decision (future decision) to overturn Roe and Casey. The states and people should decide. If my home state of California votes in representatives that want to allow for infanticide, then I will accept it and grieve for the children lost to abortion. If Texas, Oklahoma, or any other state wants to ban it outright, then I will accept it and say thanks for the children saved from abortion.

But it is crazy to believe that there is no nuance anymore. It’s hard to believe that if you support someone, you support and approve of everything they do in their lives. You support all of the people that they associate with, and any of the “controversial” positions or opinions that any of those individuals have is now magically your opinion.

I think that we’ve been “on” as a society for too long. Between the 24 hour news cycle, unlimited access to knowledge and the desire to post information at a moment’s notice, we’ve come to the point that we can’t absorb any more of it. But we have yet to figure out a reasonable way to manage it. We seem incapable as a collective to do so, and we have little incentive as individuals to do so as well.

Hopefully we’ll figure it out before we all make decisions that we come to regret as a culture.
