The more that people use the “isms,” the less that they mean. I had heard an argument recently surrounding the “OK, Groomer” comeback when it comes to the Parental Rights in Education Law in Florida. The “left” (Neo-Progressives authoritarians) uses language in two fashions. They widen the meaning of pejoratives in order to include more of their “enemies” and narrow the definition of words in order to protect their allies.
And it is in viewing this that much of the political drama makes sense. Let me explain. You can see in various opinion pieces that the Republicans are evil. Trump voters are evil. DeSantis targets gay and trans people. Anyone opposing government mandates are “anti-vaxxers.” Anyone not wanting to date a trans person is a “transphobe.” Anyone who opposes the appointment of someone based on their race, or who has a disagreement with someone’s point of view who has a different skin color, is “racist.”
I think that if we truly value our language, we cannot allow it to splinter in this way. I had always thought it odd that in Quebec they have an government office designated to keeping French as the predominant language. But more and more I understand the idea and need for it. Allowing the manipulation of language will result in the balkanization of our country, and an inevitable civil war.
