I believe we are getting to the point where conservatives realize that nothing they will do will ever be enough for the other side. Like a disapproving parent, no matter of apology, contriteness, or compromise will satisfy their desire for dominance. Conservatives have been asked to shut up, step back, back down, move aside, and let the progressives live. And for the most part, the conservatives/traditionalists have done that, for a long time. In schools, in business, in government, the laissez-faire, libertarian perspective of “you do you, just leave me alone,” was tolerated.
But now the erosion has infringed upon the deepest and most well-regarded tenants of traditionalists/conservatives. The progressive/neo-authoritarian left wants to disband the family unit and co-opt the role of parent and guardian of the children. Whether it is trying to normalize discussions about gender or sexual orientation among four to nine year olds, or exposing children to drag queens, pride parades, telling a “tomboy” that she is really a boy, and all the while attempting to actively hide this information from the parents, this infringement has become intolerable.
As Frank Herbert said,
The left has taken for granted, for far too long, the tolerance of the conservatives/traditionalists. And it sours the memories of those who acquiesced, because if they knew that this was where they’d be, they would have been more belligerent from the start. Not out of fear, but from understanding where it all leads.
So much of the current progressive push to upend society and rock the institutions is being done against the wishes and will of the people. There is no unity except through fear, and it reveals a much more totalitarian undercurrent to this movement. I hope that the progressives see what they are doing and change their ways, but in the end, if the conservatives and traditionalists refuse to move anymore, it would not surprise me.
