The world is a crazy, brutal, unfair place. We’ve for the most part, been protected from it. The more we struggle against this reality, the more discontent we will be. I think that this country is at a tipping point. So much of our culture has been changed by people seeking wealth and power and who don’t care where they come from or how their actions impact others. We fail to understand the implications of such changes to our society, like we were the first-order thinkers in the Chesterton’s fence thought experiment.
I believe that we’re going to go through a long period of hardship. We are going to learn in very difficult, costly, and deadly ways why our freedoms matter, why our culture matters, why being responsible matters. We are going to figure out that the things we value, the material possessions, the standard of living we have come to enjoy, are essentially meaningless in the grand scheme of things. We are going to find that the things we should care about have laid long forgotten and ignored, and returning to that way of life is going to be embarrassing, shame-ridden, and, at the end of that process, redeeming.
Whether we are still free by the end remains to be seen.
