I’ve been telling people who have supported Trump not to get violent, not to use the same tactics that Antifa and the BLM rioters (not protesters) have used in causing chaos and destruction. I have said to people that a media that gives poor treatment to conservatives and Republicans will look for any opportunity to paint everyone on the right as not misguided, but evil. I have said that protests are a good thing, but violence and destruction are not protest. Civil disobedience is not only acceptable, but the only way to affect the desired change, because it shows that your opponents are the only ones willing to use violence.
A small faction of the people coming to the Trump rally in DC have stormed the capitol building, have fought with police, and have engaged in criminal activity (taking pictures in Speaker Pelosi’s office for example). This is a sign that they have hit their breaking point and have nothing left to lose. This is, of course, no excuse for this behavior, just as it was no excuse for a small portion of people attending BLM protests to engage in criminal activity and cause chaos and destruction. The authorities are on their way, and people (particularly the one(s) who brought an IED into the capitol building) who engage in this kind of criminal activity should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
But I see this as the moment of no return. The media will declare that everyone at the rally is a rioter (an inverse of what happened over the summer last year when it was mostly peaceful protests), and that Trump is engaging in calling for violence. According to Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, however, Trump has called for National Guard and federal officers to help quell this riot. And that’s what it is. A riot. And the rioters deserve to be prosecuted. Just like the rioters in Portland, Los Angeles, New York, Kenosha, Chicago, and every other town where the violence had occurred. It’s not a coup. But the media will portray it that way, and the Democrats, and some Republicans will seize upon this opportunity to grab at power.
I detest violence. As Isaac Asimov says in the book Foundation, “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.” Violence strips away any support that may have been given to a movement. It’s what happened to BLM over the summer, as support waned following the riots. We’re seeing people desperate to get back to a normal that no longer exists because we the people gave our liberty over to the government out of fear, hoping that people who knew little about this virus would somehow know how to protect us. I’m both afraid and disheartened to see what will result of this foolish action from people who have insulated themselves as much as the progressives have in their echo chambers.
If the American People wish to have any semblance of a country left, they must tell the people who think that it is acceptable to storm the capital loudly and collectively “NO.” For if this kind of behavior is normalized on the right as it has been on the left, then we have truly lost.
