A lot is going on right now. I’ve been a bit busy, but things look like they’re going to be settling down for me in my personal life. But I need to get this out of my head.
We’re seeing a lot going on in the economy. Record inflation, a potential recession, formula shortages, spikes in gas prices, high food costs (with food shortages on the horizon), high rent costs, a nearly impossible housing market bubble, fertilizer shortages from the war in Ukraine, emergency funding of the Ukrainian resistance, persistent fears of COVID, and a mid-term election to boot. And I’m hearing the answers from Democrats on this wide variety of issues.
Let me see if I can’t aggregate what I’ve heard one point at a time…
- Inflation – Doesn’t exist (on the one hand), but it’s a good thing and dumping more money into the economy through modern monetary theory will reduce inflation (somehow…)
- Rent Prices – Be angry with the landlords, but we can’t control that.
- Gas Prices – Buy an electric car or take public transit. Besides, we want to get away from fossil fuels and this is a good thing to make everything more expensive.
- Food costs – This is corporate greed, and besides, we can’t do anything because the Republicans won’t go along with our agenda.
- Food shortages – Aren’t a thing, and even if they are it’s Putin’s fault.
- Housing bubble – House prices are at record highs, that’s a good thing for homeowners. Just save money until you can get a house…
- COVID – Get your fourth booster and ignore the pages of side effects because the science (medical experts/Fauci) says so.
- Ukraine – It’s Putin’s aggression and Trump’s fault that Putin invaded during the Biden admin because Trump was just a Putin puppet.
- Potential recession – that’s not our fault because we’re trying hard to protect LGBTQIA2+ kids and expand diversity, equity, and inclusion in our schools, corporations, and life. We’ve created millions of jobs and have seen record increases in pay (that have been wiped out by the record inflation).
Most of the responses have been something akin to either it’s not happening, or it’s not our fault. Meanwhile, they have set up the Disinformation Governance Board (Ministry of Truth) and are trying to establish a top-down, centralized government approved speech council, all the while claiming to be the most transparent and honest administration in US History.
Maybe more of you are seeing what I’m seeing. But I am feeling a bit gloomy today. I had semi-jokingly said that my Social Security won’t be there when I retire. It’s beginning to feel like I was right all along.
Best of luck, I’ll post more soon.
